The Brampton News honours members of the Brampton community who deserve recognition for their academic excellence, sportsmanship, noteworthy leadership or genuine caring and citizenship. Nominated persons will have the opportunity to appear on The Brampton News and brampton.com websites as well as in the brampton.com e-Newsletter.
Dilpreet K., a grade 11 high school student at St. Marguerite d'Youville, has been an amazing student leader. She is responsible for initiating and organizing the school's South Asian Heritage Month festivities and group since grade 10.
Noreen O'Reilly is this week's Community Star. Noreen is actively involved in raising funds for breast cancer research and awareness. Last year she raised over $3500.00 for the cause.
Rob Weymouth is this week's Community Star. Rob recently won the Hannaford Youth Rising Stars Brass Competition. He attended Mayfield Secondary School in the Regional Arts program. Now in 1st year at the University of Toronto in the Music Performance program, Rob has excelled.
Michelle Kopas is this week's Community Star. Michelle established the Jordan Kopas Foundation in memory of her son Jordan who passed away at the age of 4 after being struck by a moving vehicle in a parking lot. The foundation helps needy people.
Lindsay Macedo is this week's Community Star. Lindsay was an honour roll student who received numerous academic and athletic awards at St. Marguerite d'Youville Secondary School, while being an active member of the Student Council, Yearbook and school bands.
Laura Kupers is this week's Community Star. Laura is an Honour Roll student who received recognition both from her school, Brampton Centennial Secondary School, and University of Guelph which she now attends.
Gimna Ramirez is this week's Community Star. Gimna has been working with seniors since 2001. Inspired by her mother, she founded the non-profit organization Senior Coordinate Services (SCS).
Rafael is this week's Community Star. Rafael is Brampton's New Year baby. He was born on January 1, 2007 at 12:05am weighing in at 7lbs 6oz to proud parents MaryAnn and Raoul. Rafael was born at Peel Memorial Hospital in Brampton.
Laurie Hicks is this week's Community Star. Laurie works for Regeneration Outreach Community and is involved in feeding the homeless through Breakfast Programs.
Frances Tibollo is this week's Community Star. Frances established a foundation known as "The Oaklands Foundation" after traveling to Nigeria in her last year of high school. $30,000 has been raised so far to assist schools in the third world.
