» Dufferin-Peel to Open Three New Catholic Schools This School Year

Mississauga - On September 7, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will open the first Catholic secondary school in Bolton - St. Michael Catholic Secondary School located at 9130 Columbia Way. The school will accommodate 609 Grade 9 and 10 students this school year. Staff and students will celebrate the grand opening of their school with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:00 a.m.

Peel - On August 23, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will hold Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW) at five secondary schools. The three-and-a-half day school based orientation program for newcomer secondary students is facilitated by the Multicultural, Settlement and Education Partnership (MSEP), and includes teachers, settlement workers, and peer leaders - fellow students who were newcomers in previous years. The program is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) under the Settlement Workers in Schools program.

Peel - The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce its top scholars for 2009-10. Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Brampton produced Dufferin-Peel’s top scholar. Don Marcial Ragot scored an impressive 98.83 per cent average on his top six Grade 12 courses. The leading scholar from a Mississauga school is from St. Francis Xavier Secondary School. Chloe Chan scored an average of 98.67 per cent. Jennifer McCall from Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School was the top Caledon/Dufferin County scholar with a 95.67 per cent average.

» 2010 OSSLT Results

Peel - Results from the April 2010 administration of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) indicate that Dufferin-Peel continues to demonstrate a higher success rate than the province as a whole. This year, 85% of Dufferin-Peel students who wrote the OSSLT for the first time, successfully completed the test. While this represents a slight decline of 3% in the number of Dufferin-Peel students who passed the test from the previous administration in April 2009, it exceeds the pass rate of 84% for students across the province writing the test for the first time.

Peel - On Tuesday, May 25, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will honour Victor Morgado with the Catholic Award of Merit. A long-time Brampton resident, Mr. Morgado is identified as the high school student who, in 1984, approached then Premier William G. Davis as he was cutting his lawn, and asked him why he had to pay tuition to attend his Catholic high school when his public school friends did not.
