» Students Graduate with 100 Per Cent Average

Peel - Ashley Deonarain and Navneet Natt both from Turner Fenton Secondary School in Brampton earned a 100 per cent average, the highest academic average within the Peel District School Board for the 2010-11 academic year. Deonarain and Natt are among the Peel board's 3,866 Ontario scholars, students graduating grade 12 with an average of 80 per cent or higher in their top six grade 12 courses.
» Elementary School Websites Receive International Award

Peel - In September 2010, the Peel District School Board launched websites for each of its elementary schools—nearly 200 websites. The new sites feature the ability for parents to sign up for updates, and offer the option to receive critical information by text message or email, providing quick access to school closure information on snowy mornings, among other important items identified in parent focus groups. The websites won the National School Public Relations Association’s (NSPRA) Golden Achievement Award and were one of many Peel board projects to be recognized with national or international awards this year.

Peel - The Peel District School Board’s We Welcome the World Centres will continue to register newcomer students for school and help their families with settlement services during the summer months. Staff at the welcome centres provide information and services to help families make a smooth transition to life in Peel. Families new to Peel should call the welcome centre to book an orientation interview and register children (kindergarten to grade 12) for school.

» $118,000 Provides New Books, Games for Dunrankin Drive Students

Peel - Dunrankin Drive Public School is the recipient of a $118,000 grant from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. The grant, which will be used to purchase books, educational games and multimedia tools, will be celebrated at a reception at the school on June 21.

Brampton - A group of children in Sierra Leone will now have the opportunity to attend school thanks to the Social Justice Club at Sandalwood Heights Secondary School. For the last four years, Sandalwood Heights students and staff have worked with Free the Children through their Adopt a Village program to make their goal of building a school a reality. The club’s accomplishments will be celebrated at a recognition event on June 8 when they present Free the Children with a cheque for the remaining amount needed to construct the school.

Brampton - Roberta Bondar Public School will hold its Stream of Dreams unveiling ceremony on Sept. 10 to uncover a mural of fish on the schoolyard’s fence. Roberta Bondar students are participating in the Stream of Dreams program, an initiative created by Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) to educate and empower students to help protect the health of their local watershed—the mural represents their commitment to achieve this goal.
