» Deadline to register for French immersion

Peel - Are you thinking of registering your child for French immersion? For the 2012-13 school year, parents must register children for entry into grade 1 French immersion or grade 7 extended French by Friday, Jan. 27, 2012. All students who register by the deadline can attend their home French immersion school. Students will have access to busing if their home address is within the Peel District School Board’s established transportation eligibility distances.  
» Cosmetology Students Spread Holiday Cheer

Peel - Cosmetology students from Turner Fenton Secondary School will give manicures and hand massages to the residents of Southbrook Retirement Community on Dec. 20. Students will apply their skills and share stories to make connections with seniors, while giving back to the community.

» Secondary School students challenge peers to raise funds

Peel - Staff, students and volunteers from Port Credit Secondary School challenge all schools in the Peel District School Board to join S.O.A.R. (Students Helping Orphans in Africa with Relief) to help children affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. Schools are invited to register and take part in any aspect of the campaign—One Ribbon, One Day for World Aids Day on Dec. 1, 2011, Students S.O.A.R. Day on Feb. 23, 2012, or create their own activity. All funds raised will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
» H.J.A. Brown Education Centre turns 25

Peel - The year was 1986. Billy Ocean and Whitney Houston filled the airwaves—someone by the name of Oprah was given a talk show—and The Peel District School Board opened a state-of-the-art education centre. On Nov. 21, current and past employees of the Peel board will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the H.J.A. Brown Education Centre with a celebration in the atrium.

» Suzuki spends day at namesake school for opening

Peel - David Suzuki will address students, staff and community members at the official opening of his namesake school, David Suzuki Secondary School, on Nov. 17. On the same day, the school will also host EcoBuzz, an annual forum organized by the Peel Environmental Youth Alliance and EcoSource. More than 350 students from 46 schools will participate in workshops and showcase work that explores environmental issues and opportunities for action.

Peel - The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay will make its way through Brampton and Mississauga on Nov. 8. Peel District School Board students will line the relay route, and student performers will be on hand at Mississauga’s Celebration Square for the end-of-day celebration. The celebration features choir performances by students from Roberta Bondar and Sherwood Mills public schools, as well as performances by dancers and cheerleaders from Rick Hansen Secondary School.

Peel - More than 500 students will attend the Peel District School Board’s Your Canada: Student leadership in our diverse country event on Nov. 8 and 9. This leadership event is open to all students who are English language learners and/or who are newcomers in grades 5 to 12.
» New Regional Programs Open in Brampton

Peel - Two new regional programs are scheduled to open in Brampton in September 2012. Bramalea Secondary School will offer a unique Truck and Coach program and Chinguacousy Secondary School will offer SciTech, a popular program already available at Port Credit Secondary School and Tomken Road Middle School in Mississauga.
» Old Britannia Schoolhouse's Halloween Event

Peel - Parents and children are invited to visit the Old Britannia Schoolhouse for the annual Halloween Family Fun event on Oct. 28. The schoolhouse property will transform into the ‘Eerie Acres’ schoolyard in the spirit of Halloween. Games such as ghost bowling and eyeball spoon races are among the many activities taking place at the event.

Peel - Approximately 250 Peel District School Board school council members will attend Great Start: An orientation and training evening for school council members on Oct. 24 at West Credit Secondary School in Mississauga. The event features a buffet dinner prepared and served by students at West Credit and 13 workshops facilitated by Peel board staff.
