Peel – On October 10, 2006, a number of policing partners joined together to conduct commercial vehicle inspections. A total of 270 commercial vehicles were inspected, of which 108 failed the inspection and were subsequently put out of service.

On Tuesday, October 10, 2006, a number of policing partners joined together to conduct commercial vehicle inspections at the International Centre on Airport Road in Mississauga. This truck inspection program is part of the current Safe Driver campaign undertaken by Traffic Services, running until October 21, 2006.

In addition to the officers assigned by Peel Regional Police, personnel from The Ontario Provincial Police, Toronto Police Service, York Regional Police Service, Halton Police Service, Guelph Police Service, The Ministry of Transportation, Canada Customs, and The Ministry of the Environment were inspecting commercial vehicles for operational safety issues. These issues included tires, brakes, suspensions, load security, the transportation of dangerous goods and driver qualifications.

As a result of this impressive cooperative effort a total of 270 commercial vehicles were inspected, of which 108 failed the inspection and were subsequently put out of service. This was a total failure rate of 40 percent. In addition,

78 Highway Traffic Act charges were laid.
8 Dangerous Goods related charges were laid.

Weather conditions on Wednesday, October 11, prevented further commercial vehicle inspections from taking place.

Improving the mechanical safety of all vehicles operating within the Region of Peel is seen as a proactive measure in road safety for our community. In addition to the heavy truck inspections that have taken place, a series of inspections focusing on personal vehicles will also be undertaken as part of the Safe Driver campaign.
