Brampton - Habitat for Humanity Brampton is pleased to support the Region of Peel in acknowledging the United Nations' World Habitat Day on Monday October 2, 2006.

Habitat for Humanity Brampton (HFHB), a community-based, not-for-profit, faith-based organization, applauds the efforts of the Region of Peel in bringing the issue of decent, affordable housing to the forefront.

In sincere gratitude to Emil Kolb, Regional Chair and the Members of Regional Council, HFHB will be presenting a certificate of appreciation on October 5, 2006, to Members of Regional Council in their chambers, to honour the Region's efforts to reduce poverty.

HFHB is in full agreement with the Region's proclamation that encourages the citizens of all communities to; "reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter and to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat".

With 23,000 people having registered their need for affordable housing within Peel Region, many of which are families with children, the need is great and should be addressed with urgency to diminish the number of the poverty stricken within our own boundaries.

In 1950, one-third of the global population lived in cities. By 2000, that number grew to half of humanity. This is easily seen in Brampton, the second-fastest growing city in the nation.

HFHB is working to support the region's goal of creating 465 affordable housing units over the next four years by building an additional 8 homes for 8 families by 2008. While the Region will work with Provincial and Federal governments, HFHB is working to build these homes through the efforts and donations of Brampton's residents and businesses who are coming together to break the cycle of poverty at home.

Currently, HFHB is looking for to acquire donated land and raise $2M to meet the goal of 8 homes by 2008.
