The home team took another major step in their quest for a top four place in the Ontario Premier League, with a win over the powerful Irish Canadians.All three senior teams recorded victories on Saturday at the Brampton Rugby Ground.
The Beavers 1ST XV, playing against a strong wind and an attacking Irish Canadians team in the first half, defended superbly with every member of the back division bringing off great tackles. Irish Canadians took the lead with an unconverted try after 20 minutes but it was their only score during this period. Shortly before halftime, Pat Russell kicked a penalty goal for the Beavers to reduce the deficit to two points. The second half saw the home team attack continuously and the Irish Canadians rarely got into the Beaveršs territory.
A strike against the head by Dale Pike on an Irish scrum caught the visitors off guard and Chris Mooney scored a try which was converted by Russell. This was followed by a brilliant drop goal by Steve Staffieri, a new recruit from the Yeomen club, who had an outstanding game. Irish Canadians scored a late penalty but it was a case of too little too late.
There were many outstanding performances and none better than those by forwards Malcolm Kelly and Kevin Querel, although all the players were heroes on the day. A special mention must be made on the performance of young Andre Rose-Green, who, after a lengthy injury, is now back in the senior team and his performance on the left wing was absolutely tremendous.
All three teams performed superbly and with a number of new players who have joined the club in recent weeks each team gave a balanced performance and everyone at the club is really encouraged as the Beavers enter the latter stages of the league season.
