Brampton – The Region of Peel wants to assure residents that their water is
safe to drink and water quality will not be compromised as a result of
the current labour disruption involving Public Works employees.
“We are aware there is misinformation being given to the public
about Peel’s drinking water and we want residents to feel comfortable
knowing that their water is safe and continues to meet all Ministry of
the Environment regulations,” says Dan Labrecque, Commissioner of
Public Works.
Peel has both union and non-union employees licensed and certified
to work on the water system. Currently 68 licensed non-unionized staff
are maintaining essential water services including sampling and flushing
watermains to maintain disinfection levels, pumping station
inspections and well treatment.
Peel’s water continues to be tested, treated and monitored as part of the Safe Drinking Water Act, and
meets all provincial regulatory requirements. Peel’s water is tested
for contaminants such as E.coli and other regulated health and
aesthetic (taste, smell and colour) factors. Water samples are only
sent to labs accredited by the Standards Council of Canada and licensed
by the Ministry of the Environment.
