Brampton – The Region of Peel and OPSEU Local 277, representing approximately 500 unionized employees in Peel Regional Paramedic Services (PRPS), will be seeking the assistance of a conciliator to negotiate a new collective agreement.

“Our intent is to negotiate a collective agreement that is fair not only to our paramedics, but also to our taxpayers,” said David Szwarc, Chief Administrative Officer, Region of Peel. “We believe that conciliation will help us achieve this.”

Conciliation with a government-appointed conciliator is the next step when an impasse is reached in the normal course of bargaining.

“We continue to provide paramedic services to Peel residents,” said Steve Davis, Acting Director, Human Resources. “Conciliation has no impact on the services we provide to protect public health and safety. We’re optimistic that we’ll reach a fair settlement with our paramedic staff.”

The contract for unionized PRPS staff expired on March 31, 2012.

Peel Paramedics respond to more than 85,000 emergency medical calls every year. PRPS employs approximately 500 full-time and part-time Primary and Advanced Care Paramedics and 80 management and support staff. PRPS is responsible to care for more than 1.3 million people in Peel Region.
