Nearly 100 grade 1 to 4 students from five Peel District School Board schools will take part in the Junior First LEGO League Showcase
on May 28 at the HJA Brown Education Centre. The program features a
real-world challenge to be solved by research, critical thinking and
“The event is an opportunity for students to interact and learn from
technology,” says Harpreet Kaur Neelam, instructional coordinator of
science and technological education at the Peel board. “It’s a way for
students to get excited about science and technology and, for most of
the students, it’s their first experience with robotics.”
Guided by their teachers, students work with LEGO elements and moving
parts to create solutions and present them for review. The theme for
the event is Snack Attack. Teams will research one of their
favourite snacks to find out where each ingredient comes from. Their
LEGO models will reflect what they have learned from their research. One
of the models must be a simple machine and one of the models must have a
motorized part, both of which can be incorporated into the same model.
FIRST Robotics Canada has sponsored 20 teams and 20 kits for the event.
