Brampton – During the five year period between 2006 and 2011, the population of Peel grew from 1,159,455 to 1,296,814, a growth rate of 11.8%. The city of Brampton experienced 20.8% growth, while the city of Mississauga had 6.7% growth and the town of Caledon grew by 4.2% since 2006.

“The Region of Peel has grown rapidly since 2006 and continues to grow at a fast pace,” said Regional Chair Emil Kolb. “We continue to attract more residents within the Greater Toronto Area each year, making us a culturally rich, dynamic and changing community.”
Some of the 2011 Census highlights include:

Population
    •    Peel grew by an average of 27,472 persons each year, or 137,359 people in total, between 2006 and 2011;
    •    Peel has the second largest share of the Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA) population; and
    •    Peel’s population is projected to continue growing.

The results of the census also show that Mississauga accounted for 55.0% of Peel’s population, while Brampton and Caledon accounted for 40.4% and 4.6% respectively. Brampton’s share of Peel’s total population increased between 2006 and 2011, while Caledon and Mississauga’s share decreased.

Private Dwellings

According to the 2011 Census, there were 402,939 occupied private dwellings in Peel, an increase of 12.2% from 2006. From 2006 to 2011, the number of occupied private dwellings increased by 9.2% in Mississauga (214,894 to 234,582); 18.5% in Brampton (125,934 to 149,271); and 4.8% in Caledon (18,214 to 19,086). Brampton’s persons per occupied private dwelling increased from 3.44 in 2006 to 3.51 in 2011. Persons per occupied private dwelling decreased in Mississauga from 3.11 to 3.04 and in Caledon from 3.13 to 3.12.

Peel compared to other GTA Municipalities

Peel’s residents comprised 21.4% of the total GTA population, which is the second largest share behind Toronto (43.2%). “The Region of Peel continues to attract an increasing share of the GTA population, which has been a consistent trend over the past few census periods,” said Arvin Prasad, Director of Integrated Planning. Peel also has the third highest growth rate in population, behind York (15.7%) and Halton (14.2%).

With an 18.6% share, Peel has the second highest number of occupied private dwelling units in the GTA, behind Toronto (48.4%). The growth in occupied private dwellings ranks Peel third in the GTA, behind York (17.4%) and Halton (14.1%). The average number of persons per occupied dwelling unit (PPU) has decreased slightly in Peel, from 3.23 to 3.22, but is still the highest in the GTA.
