Brampton - The Brampton Battalion is to open the 2010-11 Ontario Hockey League season at home against the Erie Otters on Friday, Sept. 24, the club announced Wednesday.

The Battalion opens the season, the 13th in its history, against a Western Conference opponent for the first time since 2004, when the Troops defeated the visiting Guelph Storm 5-2.

The Battalion’s second game is a visit to the Barrie Colts, a Central Division and Eastern Conference foe, on Sept. 30.

The Battalion plays 34 home games, comprising 20 Sundays, seven Fridays, including New Year’s Eve, six Thursdays and Thanksgiving Monday.

Start times are 2 p.m. on Sundays, Thanksgiving Monday and New Year’s Eve, 7 p.m. on Thursdays and 7:30 p.m. on Fridays other than Dec. 31.

There is one home-and-home series on the schedule, with the Battalion hosting the Saginaw Spirit on Nov. 14 and visiting Saginaw four days later.

Within the Central, one of two divisions in the conference, the Battalion faces the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors and Sudbury Wolves eight times each and Barrie and the Niagara IceDogs six times each. The Troops play East Division teams four times each and Western Conference opponents twice each.

BATTALION NOTEBOOK: The Battalion, which visits the Belleville Bulls on Jan. 1, plays on New Year’s Day for the first time since 2005, when it lost 4-3 in overtime to the host Peterborough Petes … The Troops play six games before a Thanksgiving Monday date against the visiting Majors. Last year the Battalion played seven games in that stretch … For the first time, the Kingston Frontenacs provide the opposition on New Year’s Eve … The Nov. 18 date at Saginaw opens a run of four road games that ends at Kingston on Nov. 26 … The Troops play 14 games in January, their busiest month since October, 2004, when there also were 14 games on the schedule … The Windsor Spitfires, reigning OHL and Memorial Cup champions, make their only visit of the season on Feb. 6. The Spitfires host the Battalion on Jan. 20 … The Battalion makes its lone visit to Erie on Dec. 17 ... The Troops visit the Oshawa Generals for a Family Day matinee on Feb. 21 … The Battalion has six stretches in which it plays three games in as many days.
