Brampton - From March 6 to April 24, 2010, the Region of Peel's Human Services department is holding free Income Tax Preparation Services for low income individuals and families. Accountants from the Certified General Accountants of Ontario – Peel Chapter will be preparing the tax returns as part of the Canada Revenue Agency's Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. Advance registration is required.

Free tax preparation services are available for individuals with gross (before deductions) income under $27,500 or for families with a gross income under $35,000. Income Tax returns with the following types of income and/or expenses do not qualify for volunteer tax assistance, as these types of returns are more complex and require additional time to prepare:

  • Rental income (or losses)
  • Business income (or losses)
  • Foreign income
  • Capital gains (or losses)
  • Employment expenses
  • Support payments (paid or received)
  • Interest income exceeds $1,000
  • Returns for deceased individuals
  • Returns for bankrupt individuals
  • Corporate or trust income tax returns

Returns for tax years 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 can also be done if each tax return meets the above criteria. Only Ontario residents can take part (out-of-province returns cannot be done). E-filing will be used where available; otherwise, accountants will print paper copies of the completed Tax Return and clients will be responsible for mailing their completed return to the Canada Revenue Agency. E-filing is not available for people filing a tax return for the first time.

Call the tax clinic location nearest you to book an appointment. Once registered, you will be instructed which documents to bring to your appointment.
