The Region of Peel has waived drop-off fees at its Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) for dedicated loads of select waste electronic equipment and used tires.

The Government of Ontario recently introduced electronics and tire stewardship programs that make manufacturers responsible for the full life cycle of the products they produce. Third party organizations have been designated by the Province to collect these items from participating municipalities and retailers and recycle them. In addition to the Region's CRCs, residents can find drop-off sites for electronics at www.dowhatyoucan.ca and for tires at http://www.ontariots.ca/.

"It's great to see the Ontario Government implementing programs that begin to shift the financial responsibility for managing waste from municipalities to the manufacturers who create the waste," says Councillor Maja Prentice, Chair of the Waste Management Committee. "I encourage residents to use our recycling centres to drop off used electronics and tires, as well as a wide variety of other household hazardous waste, reusable, recyclable and waste items."

The following electronic items are now accepted for free in dedicated loads at CRCs:

  • Desktop computers
  • Laptop computers
  • Computer peripherals
  • Monitors
  • Televisions
  • Printing devices
  • Telephones and accessories
  • Cellular phones
  • PDAs and pagers
  • Audio and video players
  • Cameras
  • Equalizers, (pre)amplifiers
  • Radios
  • Receivers
  • Speakers
  • Tuners
  • Turntables
  • Video players/projectors
  • Video recorders
  • Personal handheld computers

Passenger car and light truck tires are also accepted for free in dedicated loads at all CRCs. At Caledon CRC, residents may also drop off oversized tires, such as farm equipment tires.

Residents may drop off the following items for free:

  • Household hazardous waste
  • Reusable goods
  • Dedicated loads of blue box materials, electronics, tires (passenger or light truck) and/or large metal appliances and fixtures

Dedicated loads of yard waste can be dropped off for free at the Bolton and Caledon CRCs only.

Vehicles and/or trailers containing only free-of-charge items are considered to have dedicated loads. Vehicles and/or trailers containing both free-of-charge items and chargeable items are subject to the drop-off fee.

There is a $2 flat rate for loads up to and including 25 kg (55 lbs.). Loads greater than 25 kg
(55 lbs.) are charged 8¢ per kilogram. A complete list of items accepted at CRCs is available at www.peelregion.ca/waste and in the 2009/2010 Waste Management Guide.

The Region of Peel provides waste management services in the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga and in the Town of Caledon.
