Brampton - Today the Region of Peel joins the Government of Canada in celebrating National Child Day and the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). For the third year, Peel Regional Council has proclaimed Nov. 20 as National Child Day in Peel.

Canada has celebrated National Child Day since the passing of Bill C-371, also known as the Child Day Act, in 1993. Each year on Nov. 20, the nation commemorates the contributions and rights of children in Canada. This day also marks the implementation of two significant documents focused on the rights of children: the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child (signed in 1959) and the UNCRC (adopted by Canada on Nov. 20, 1989). This year, the Government of Canada joins the United Nations in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the UNCRC and the success of the many initiatives that have been created to ensure that all children under the age of 18, are protected and treated as active, contributing citizens.

"Council continues its commitment to promoting the basic rights of all children, by recognizing National Child Day on November 20 and also by investing in the supports and services that protect children's rights throughout the entire year," said Patricia Mullin, Regional Councillor and Chair of the Region's Human Services Committee.

In 2007, Success by 6 Peel received Peel Regional Council's support to endorse the Peel Children's Charter of Rights and proclaim Nov. 20 as National Child Day in Peel.

"The Region of Peel is committed to providing the children of our community with the support and programs needed for their successful development," said Janet Menard, Commissioner of the Region's Human Services department. "Our staff are involved with community partners in numerous initiatives dedicated to the rights and well-being of children."

The Human Services department supports full participation by all residents in the economic, social and cultural life of the Region by providing a continuum of supports. The department works collaboratively with other Peel agencies to improve the opportunities and quality of life for children, families and individuals living in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.

The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon.
