Turner Fenton Secondary School's Karen Leung has achieved top honours with the highest academic average among all Peel students for the 2005-06 school year with 99.3 per cent. She is among the Peel board's 2,507 Ontario scholars. To become an Ontario scholar, grade 12 students must have an average of 80 per cent or higher in their top six grade 12 courses.
"I have always found a way to enjoy school," explains Leung. "I would tell anybody who wants to achieve academic success to eat breakfast and pay attention." In September, she will head to Columbia University to study English and economics. Leung is a student of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Turner Fenton in Brampton. IB is a pre-university course of studies offered during the last two years of secondary school. Developed to prepare bright, highly motivated students for an internationally-recognized university entrance, this program offers comprehensive curriculum that challenges the whole student beyond the traditional realm of the secondary school experience. All students of the IB program are required to engage in the study of languages, sciences, mathematics and humanities.
Mississauga's top Ontario scholar is The Woodlands Secondary School student Betty Cheng, who graduated with a 98 per cent average. Cheng will begin working toward at double bachelor in business and math, a joint program between Waterloo and Laurier Universities.
The top scholar at the Humberview Secondary School in Caledon is Michelle Klingel, who graduated with an average of 94.7 per cent.Klingel will head to the University of Toronto this fall to study biology.
