Ottawa - Mississauga-Brampton South MP Navdeep Bains will lead a special committee that will advise Party Leader Michael Ignatieff on party renewal.  The appointment was announced at a meeting of the Liberal Party's National Executive this weekend.

Renewal will take many forms," said Mr. Ignatieff. "It is my hope the Liberal Party of Canada will be guided by the views of each and every one of its members as we think about our policies, our structures and our methods of engaging with Canadians."

The committee has a strong mandate to look at key areas suggested by the grassroots of the party.  These include:

·       The leadership selection process;

·       The federated structure of the party

·       The contributions of Commissions to achieving equitable representation; and

·       The development of a clear policy process that involves all levels of the party.

"I believe strongly in the Liberal Party and I am delighted to be able to play a role in shaping its future," said Mr. Bains.  "I am honoured by the Leader's confidence and will work hard to consult with all Liberals and the general public to help build a Liberal Party that is strong, inclusive and ready to serve the best interests of Canadians."
