Company Will Provide Comprehensive Fleet Management and Intelligent Transportation System

DALLAS, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Affiliated Computer Services, Inc. (NYSE: ACS) today announced a $12 (CDN) million contract with the City of Brampton to enable the transit authority to improve the effectiveness of its bus services as well as its future AcceleRide Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services that are scheduled to be operational in 2010.

ACS will supply Brampton Transit with an integrated suite of real-time analytical tools that will assist in overall operations management of its 250-vehicle fixed route fleet as well as its nine supervisory vehicles. Brampton Transit will utilize ACS' latest Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system called OrbCAD XP.

"The SmartBus project is a key component of Brampton Transit's drive to continually improve the quality of service that we offer to our passengers -- Working with ACS, the SmartBus project will allow Brampton Transit to improve the management efficiency of our fleet of vehicles while making our system safer, and providing our customers with more means of accessing real-time, dynamic service information," said Suzanne Connor, Director of Brampton Transit. "The SmartBus program will also provide many of the technology components of our AcceleRide Bus Rapid Transit project, such as the variable message signs that will display real time schedule and service information at all of our AcceleRide Bus Rapid Transit stations, transit centers, and major transit stops."

AcceleRide, is an initiative of the City of Brampton, a suburb of Toronto, Ontario, and Brampton Transit to introduce enhanced BRT services on the city's key north-south and east-west arterial corridors. AcceleRide is intended to improve the reliability and quality of transit service and provide better connectivity within and beyond Brampton's boundaries. Brampton Transit is an award-winning transit system with the fastest growth of any transit system in Canada. Service levels increase, on average 10-to-15 percent annually, while the industry average is approximately three percent.

"ACS shares Brampton's vision for creating a showcase public transportation system," said David Kachemov, senior vice president and managing director of the ACS Transportation Management Solutions group. "With a full range of intelligent transportation systems that will be integrated into Brampton's transit vehicles, ACS will provide many new tools that will enable the city to enhance its customer focus."

One of many new features that ACS will provide to Brampton Transit will be the ability to transfer operational data between the dispatch centers and Brampton Transit buses via three different communication modes. Brampton Transit buses will communicate with the OrbCAD XP system via WiFi, two-way radio, and cellular connections.

The WiFi system will provide Brampton Transit vehicles with a large communication bandwidth so that packets of data may pass between the dispatch centers and the vehicles. The two-way radio connection will enable Brampton's vehicles to take advantage of its existing, secure radio network and will minimize operational costs. Additionally, a cellular data linkage will ensure that Brampton Transit buses will receive and transmit data communications when traveling outside of the City of Brampton's boundaries.

Brampton Transit will benefit from ACS' SmartTraveler products that provide passengers with the latest schedule in real-time and updated service information for the city's transits services. This capability will provide riders with the latest operating information at transit stops, via the internet, and to cellular phones via text messages. ACS will also be providing its Smartstop Next Stop Automated Vehicle Annunciation, Traffic Signal Priority management tools to improve operating times of buses, and OrbStar color Mobile Data Terminals (MDT) with touch screen capabilities in the buses allowing vehicle operators will be able to manage communications and many vehicle systems.

I have read this article and believe that Brampton needs to move forward and improve their transit system immensely to keep traffic off the poorly designed highways and throughways. Our transit system is outdated. Go trains and buses only operate occasionally on weekends if not at all or even extended hours in the evening. This also include CN. What didn't impress me was the fact stemming from the economy being tight these days why couldn't source corporations within Canada. There is no need to pursue avenues outside of the country. It's the old cliché "Buy Ontario" well "Buy Canadian" market share.
