Peel - The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will mark UNESCO's World Teachers' Day with a message to the system recognizing and thanking the board's 5,600 teachers, and those who support them in the classroom, for their contribution to Catholic education. World Teachers' Day is celebrated annually on October 5.

"The board is proud to recognize the professionalism and dedication of our teachers, and the extraordinary contributions they make to the development and success of our young people," said board chair Bruno Iannicca.

On September 23, the board passed a resolution that recognized World Teachers' Day and thanked teachers for their dedication and commitment to students and Catholic education:

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board proclaims that October 5, 2008 be recognized and celebrated as World Teachers' Day in Dufferin-Peel schools and facilities and that all are encouraged to thank teachers for their commitment to Catholic education in Dufferin-Peel and for the outstanding work they do with students each and every day.

"It is because of their teaching skills and commitment to Catholic education, that thousands of children are able to receive the holistic Catholic education that enables them to develop into solid citizens," said John Kostoff, director of education. "We also recognize and salute the contributions of the broad range of staff which support teachers' classroom activities. Education is a team concept and we are proud of all our players."

"Teachers are highly visible, relevant role models for our youth, and we feel that Dufferin-Peel teachers are among the best in the profession," added Iannicca.

Dufferin-Peel schools are encouraged to celebrate World Teachers' Day on Friday, October 3 as October 5 falls on a Sunday this year. During morning announcements, students at each school will be encouraged to thank their teachers and express their appreciation for the important role they play in the lives of our youth.
