Toronto - Almost 75 young Canadians will compete in a biathlon at the Aurora Recreation Centre Saturday, October 4.

The challenging event will see the teens match their long distance running and marksmanship skills.

Thirteen teams, representing area air, army and sea cadets, are entered from Alliston, Aurora, Barrie, Brampton, Caledon, Midland, Oshawa, Shelburne and throughout Toronto.  The athletes will compete in junior and senior individual categories, as well as a 'composite' event for teams of three.

Biathlon is traditionally a winter sport pairing marksmanship and cross country skiing.  This event is a 'summer' biathlon, and the cadets complete three 500 metre runs, each separated by targetshooting with standard cadet pellet rifles. Competitors have a total of 25 minutes to complete the event course.

On-site at the event will be displays from York EMS, Central York Fire and York Regional Police ERU.

Cadets is a federally-sponsored program for young Canadians ages 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of challenging and rewarding activities, and learning more about the Canadian Forces.

Cadets are not part of the Canadian Forces, with no expectation they join the military.  Through innovative activities, cadets make valuable contributions to Canada through environmental, citizenship and community activities. As cadets, they learn valuable life and work skills like teamwork and leadership.
