Since 1979, The Brampton Minor Basketball Association (BMBA) has been dedicated to teaching youths ages 7-18 to play and enjoy the game of basketball. From grass-roots development to our elite development representative teams, our goal is to continually establish a program that will provide an atmosphere to challenge all participants, allowing them to develop at their own pace. Each year we place close to 1,300 participants in our winter/summer house and rep team leagues. BMBA emphasizes fair play, respect and community service. Over the years we have seen the growth and enjoyment of this wonderful sport soar in our community.
Brampton - Selected players from the Brampton Minor Basketball Association (BMBA) Player Development Training Program recently competed in the 2008 Northwest Indiana Division 1 Basketball Tournament in Highland, Indiana. This tournament was sanctioned by the American Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and featured some of the toughest competition in area as participating teams prepared for the US Junior National Championships.
The BMBA Grade 4 team was undermanned entering the tournament with only 7 players. They included 5 players from the successful winter novice program and two additional players from the summer development program. The Grade 4 boys had little opportunity to prepare for the fast-paced American brand of basketball.
The pool games were exciting with Brampton falling behind by 12 points early in the first game against the Orange Crush team from Illinois.Showing grit and determination the boys chipped away at the lead and tied the game with one minute to go in the game.Brampton went on to win the opening game by 2 points. The second game against the Chicago Tigers was equally exciting with Brampton once again falling behind by 10 points late in the second half.Although physically exhausted by the frenetic pace and the short bench, the boys once again fought hard to pull even with the Tigers with time running out in the last minute of the game and went on to win the game by 1 point.
Brampton's stellar play during the pool games gave them a direct route to the finals where they once again met up with the Chicago Tigers. However, this time the well rested Brampton squad were firing on all cylinders employing a suffocating defence, easily handling the Tiger's full court pressure, and hitting a high percentage of shots from the field.Brampton went on to handily defeat the Tigers and win the championship game by 15 points.
Members of the championship BMBA Grade 4 team includes (front row) Devante Case and Matthew O'Brien (middle row) Nikhil Sidhu, Paolo Torres, Jaskaran Samra, Taijon Williams, Ishanvir Virdi (back row) Coach Steve O'Brien.
