Brampton - On Sunday June 22, Raxx Entertainment Complex in Brampton, Ontario, hosted "The Human Zoo", a benefit co-produced by Poison Pen and Velvet Karma Productions, for WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals).

The event featured back-to-back performances by five amazing indie bands who donated their time and talent, including Red Roses Black, Chloe and the Crossroads, Dame, Proppa*aganda, and GP - a Tool Tribute. The show also introduced the benefit's inspiration, six-year old animal rights activist Jessie Leigh.

To expand on the entertainment factor of the event, the all-ages benefit included a selection of games, card reading, henna tattoos, pool tournaments, and face painting for children.Between performances, more than $8000 in donated prizes were raffled off, including 18 fold-up A-bikes, as found on You Tube's video – "A-bike – An Open and Shut Case", as well as 7 sets of jumping stilts.Bikes and stilts were the generous contributions of Fergus Elliott of Brand Rock Wholesale. Also raffled were several sets of Channon Belfrey jewellery, autographed books, and an impressive photography package from Jaylyn Photography.

Funds raised by the show were aimed at the Toronto chapter of WSPA's esteemed worldwide organization, to carry out and fund fieldwork that directly alleviates animal suffering; to promote the passing of legislation that protects animals; and to provide education and training to improve animal welfare.

Rogers Television, Indie Love Radio, and local newspapers showed up to cover the event and interview the participants.

Some of the animal issues touched upon over the course of the day included bear farming, bear baiting, the Chinese fur trade, and shark finning to name a few.And to bring the topic even closer to home, the Toronto Wildlife Center made an appearance with a selection of 'touchables', designed to illustrate man's impact on animals that dwell in and around the city.

Six-year old Jessie Leigh, the inspiration for the event, performed two songs that day.
