Poison Pen and Velvet Karma Productions in cooperation with WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals – www.wspa.ca) proudly present "The Human Zoo", on Sunday June 22, 2008, from 3 - 9pm at RAXX Entertainment Complex in Brampton -- 370 Main St. N (Hwy #10 - Main and Vodden).
This family-friendly music benefit will assist in bringing awareness to WSPA and the atrocities they fight against. At a time when so many organizations are focused on saving the earth, it's important to understand that animals play a vital role in the balancing act.The funds raised will go to the Toronto chapter of the esteemed worldwide organization, to carry out and fund field work that directly alleviates animal suffering; to promote the passing of legislation that protects animals; and, to provide education and training to improve animal welfare.
The event was inspired by six year-old activist Jessie Leigh, whose passion and dedication to animal welfare was recently recognized by Impact Canada, as well as environmentalist/scientist David Suzuki. To view her website and gain more information on the plight of animal welfare, please visit www.myspace.com/ouranimalfriends
To help spread the word, 6 indie rock bands are donating their time and talent, including the media-friendly all-female power trio, DAME. The amiable threesome hail from Brampton and are quickly making their mark in the industry. They can found on the web at myspace.com/dameband.Award-winning vocalist Heidi Propp, who began with an impressive career as a soloist, will also appear with her new energetic rock & blues band - Propp*aganda. Heidi can be found at myspace.com/heidipropp or with her band at myspace.com/proppagandaband. Amazingly talented and entertaining pop/rock bands Red Roses Black and Planet 4 join the line-up (myspace.com/redrosesblack and planet4music.com), as well as a "Tool Tribute", featuring vocals by Katee Lee of DAME.Jessie Leigh will also perform.
Face painting will be offered for the children and several interesting prizes will be raffled off, with proceeds going to the charity.Among those prizes are 4 incredible new-wave bicycles that fold-up to the size of a briefcase. Band merchandise will be available for purchase, and special animal-themed drinks and food items will be on the menu, with a portion of the proceeds going to the cause.
WSPA materials will be on hand for reading, and petitions will be available for signing. As well, The Toronto Wildlife Center will make an appearance with some animal "touchables", and will talk about their "Lights Out" campaign.
A suggestion box will be in place for anyone who would like to contribute ideas and suggestions to stop such abysmal problems as shark finning, bear baiting, the dolphin slaughter, whaling, the seal hunt, long line fishing, bear farming, the Chinese fur trade, poaching of exotics, and virtually any animal-related atrocity in existence.
Please come out and help support this worthwhile event. You won't be disappointed!! A donation of $2 is appreciated in place of admission.
