Peel Regional Police press releases and community events information.According to the Media Awareness Network (http://www.media-awareness.ca/), the following facts reflect the prevalence of interaction with the World Wide Web by the early age of 14:
- 43% of youth have their own computer connected to the internet
- 47% have their own MP player
- 25% have their own webcam
- 77% use instant messaging
- 41% have their own cell phone
- 26% have their own website
- 18% express their thoughts and record their daily lives on an on-line diary or web blog
Many of these electronic forums create an environment which enables discrimination, hatred and exclusion of marginalized and vulnerable populations. Violence prevention strategies and education, particularly amongst our youth population, are a vital component in ensuring healthy, safe communities.
