Brampton - Will my teen's text messages affect her personal safety? Am I doing enough to cyberproof my teen? Should I be supervising house parties? Parents will have the chance to get answers to these questions about personal and online safety at an Empowering Parents workshop at Sandalwood Heights Secondary School on May 7.
"With the increasing speed of computer technology and the potential dangers that exist on the Internet, Sandalwood Heights welcomes the opportunity for our community of parents to learn more about how to protect their children," says John Chasty, principal at Sandalwood Heights. "This workshop is a must for every parent."
Between 7 and 8:15 p.m., parents, caregivers and educators will learn about emerging crime and violence trends and learn how to recognize the signs that their teens may be involved in unhealthy activities. "Together with our local partners—Peel Regional Police, Brampton Safe City Association and the YMCA—we want to help keep students and the community safe," notes Tawney Perri, co-chair of the Sandalwood Heights School Council.
The evening workshop, organized by the Sandalwood Heights School Council, will include a presentation by Peel Regional Police on personal safety and Internet safety, followed by lessons on the importance of supervising house parties, cyberproofing, computer lingo and drug and alcohol abuse.
The Brampton Safe City Association created its Empowering Parents workshop series to teach parents and educators about emerging crime and violence trends, and to help keep children safe. The Empowering Parents Project is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
