Brampton - In recognition of the important contributions volunteers make to the Peel community, Peel Regional Council has proclaimed April 27 to May 3 National Volunteer Week in the Region of Peel. The week coincides with Volunteer Canada's and will honour the over 1,700 volunteers who work with Regional staff to deliver Regional programs and services.

"Peel is strengthened by the commitment of our volunteers to help us deliver Regional programs and services every day," said Emil Kolb, Regional Chair. "On behalf of Regional Council, I want to thank them for their time and knowledge, and for contributing to the continued growth of our compassionate and caring community."

The Region of Peel is hosting program-specific volunteer recognition events for the individuals who, throughout 2007, have contributed to the following:

  • Public Health (Breastfeeding Peer Support for Families, HeartMobile Program in workplaces and the community, Community Food Advisors and In-home Visiting Programs)
  • Long Term Care Centres and Adult Day Services for seniors
  • TransHelp, Children's Services, Peel Living and Housing programs
  • Paramedic and Emergency Services, as amateur radio operators and also taking part in community outreach and educational activities
  • Advisory boards that help make decisions about programs regarding issues such as accessibility, sustainability and water quality in Peel
  • The Heritage Complex's diverse programs, services and fundraising efforts
  • Special events such as the Peel Children's Water Festival, Public Works Week and Environment Days
