Peel - Peel Regional Police Fraud Detectives have arrested a Mississauga man connected to an internet fraud involving a fictitious hockey league and school.
Investigators allege that in March 2007, Randy GUMBLEY, age 41 of Mississauga, created websites describing an elite private hockey school named "WaltonGatesAcademy" and an elite hockey league named "The Canadian Junior Elite Hockey League".
Over the next several months, GUMBLEY recruited players from the United States and Australia to attend the fictitious academy in Brampton. GUMBLEY is believed to have given tours of various arenas and community colleges to his victims, holding them out to be the locations associated to his academy and league.
Randy GUMBLEY is alleged to have received funds in excess of $100,000, which were paid to him as tuition and related fees for potential students. No services were ever provided in return for the funds.
On Sunday, April 27, 2008, Randy GUMBLEY was arrested in Brampton and charged with one count of Defraud the Public and ten counts of Fraud Over $5000. He was held pending a bail hearing.
