The City takes a moment to remember
people killed or injured in workplace
Brampton - In memory of those killed or injured in the workplace, the City of Brampton and the Brampton-Mississauga District Labour Council will hold a day of mourning ceremony at the community flag pole at Brampton City Hall on Monday, April 28 from 11 a.m. – noon. The City of Brampton will also lower flags at all of its buildings to half-mast from sunrise to sunset on April 28, following the Federal Government Flag Protocol, to recognize the Workers' Day of Mourning.
"The National Day of Mourning is an opportunity for us to honour the memory of our fellow citizens who have been tragically killed in the workplace," said Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell. "Each year, thousands of Canadian workers die as a result of accidents and countless others are injured. As we mark our National Day of Mourning, we must all reaffirm out commitment to making workplaces safer."
According to statistics from the Canadian Labour Congress there are around a million workplace injuries a year in Canada — a compensable injury occurs every seven seconds each working day. In 2007, Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) reported 555 claims for worker deaths, and 333,938 claims for work-related injuries and disease.
"On this day Canada mourns the victims of workplace accidents and disease. We can all make an effort to make our workplace safer. It is time for us to renew our pledge to make our environment safe for all our colleagues," said Patrick Williams, Health and Safety Representative for the Brampton Mississauga District Labour Council.
