At 6:33 p.m. the Peel Regional Police (PRP) advised the SIU that, a number of their officers responded to a disturbance call on Alaskan Summit Cr. in Brampton. When an officer arrived he saw a man wielding a baseball bat. The officer confronted the man. After some interaction the officer fired his pistol. The man sustained a single gunshot wound to his abdomen.
22-year-old Nirmal Bagri was taken to Brampton Civic Hospital by ambulance where he underwent surgery. Mr. Bagri is recovering in hospital.
The SIU has designated one PRP officer as a subject officer and four as witness officers.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries (including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
