Canadian Blood Services
Canadian Blood Services is a national, not-for-profit charitable organization that manages the blood supply in all provinces and territories outside of Quebec and oversees the country's Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry. A dedicated team of about 4,800 staff and 17,000 volunteers enable us to operate 40 permanent collection sites and more than 20,000 donor clinics annually. Canadian Blood Services is a non-governmental organization, however the Provincial and Territorial Ministers of Health provide operational funding, and the federal government, through Health Canada, is responsible for regulating the blood system. For more information, please call 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283).

Canadian Blood Services encourages residents to help ensure hospital patients receive the gift of life.

Brampton, December 2007 – Canadian Blood Services is asking Canadians to remember the quote by Mark Twain this holiday season; "to get the full value of joy you must have somebody to divide it with".  It is a fact that 1 in 2 Canadians have been touched by the need for blood or blood products, and this year we need the help of all Canadians to make sure those in need receive the blood and blood products they require.  According to Ipsos Reid, over 70% of Canadians would rather have less emphasis put on gift giving during the holiday season. This is why Canadian Blood Services is asking Brampton residents to bring in a friend or family member to their local blood donor clinic so they can give the best gift of all – a life.

Canadian Blood Services is asking the people of Brampton to make blood donation an important part of their holiday season activities from December 15 to January 4, 2008.  During this campaign, donors can fill out cards to give to those who have never donated, encouraging them to make a life-saving commitment over the holidays as well.

The need for blood never stops - cancer patients, patients who need life-saving surgery, trauma victims and many others depend on a stable blood supply year-round.  This is why Canadian Blood Services has teamed up with a 'special holiday' Partners for Life member The Rose Theatre by providing an example for other companies and organizations to lead by example and make blood donation part of their social and civic responsibilities.  A special holiday blood donor clinic will be held at The Rose Theatre, 1 Theatre Lane, on Thursday, December 27th from 4:30 to 7:30 pm and everyone is welcome to attend.

This year, Canadian Blood Services estimates it will need to collect 84,500 red blood cells, plasma or platelet donations nationally between December 3 and January 4 to help meet hospital needs. In Central Ontario, at the end of the holiday season, Canadian Blood Services anticipates hospital need for blood and blood products will have outstripped blood donations during the same time by over 30 percent (almost 4,000 units).  During Christmas week, the estimated gap between anticipated hospital need and blood donations received is almost 40 per cent. Everyone who attends the Rose Theatre clinic will be able to take in a backstage tour and will be entered into a raffle for 2 – pick 3 ticket packages (the winner will be able to pick a pair of tickets up to 3 shows – value to be limited to a maximum of $300) which is being graciously offered by the Rose Theatre to help increase blood donations during this difficult time.

Caryna Wilding, Clinic Recruitment Coordinator for Canadian Blood Services says, "The holiday season is a perfect time to share one's health and vitality with those in need and why not do that with a friend?" She adds, "We are very fortunate our corporate and community partners share this view as blood as a meaningful gift that allows Canadians to acknowledge their love and respect for their friends and family and help others in need.  The cost is free and the benefits are immeasurable."
