Advertising in Schools Media Position Paper
Question: Do you agree/disagree with the use of advertising and corporate sponsorship in schools?
Advertisement, a way for corporations to persuade their audience to buy their product or to just let them know that it is out there. Sometimes advertisers go to any length to make their product appealing to the consumer. They reach out to all audiences, in different countries, different genders, and different ages. Including those in the youth ages; meaning there is advertisement in the academic environment as well as the rest. The question now is, "do I agree with this use?"
In my opinion the use of advertising and corporate sponsorship within schools have positive and negative effects on these children; so I agree and disagree with this subject. Reasons why I agree with advertising and corporate sponsorship within the schools is helping the students to become more aware with what is happening around them, to help with their development and understand the promoting of positive attitudes and actions that they should have. For example, within our school we have ads such as the Milk Machines that help promote healthy bones instead of having soda all the time, which in our society is making most of the population overweight. There are also posters around the school promoting against bullying, about our special differences, as well as promoting a good attitude towards schoolwork and within the classroom. This would allow the students to know about issues such as bullying that go on in the school environment and to know how to prevent it. There are the posters letting others know that our differences are special, just to help the children develop knowing that we are a diverse nation and it making up who we are. Lastly, there are also posters in our classrooms that promote a positive attitude towards homework, achievement schoolwork and in the classroom. These advertisements are supporting the development of the students, how they should in the place where they spend most of their time.
There are also some negative reasons, which is why I am also against advertising and corporate sponsorship within the schools. These reasons are that there are some advertisements that are within a school. One example is the vending machines, mostly in high schools. This promotes negative attitudes in the school environment because it seems to be promoting junk food, to these students who again spend most of their time in this place. This would make the students start to develop a bad attitude towards to the school, by providing the junk food making them seem a little more loose about the idea of going to school. This is one negative reason why I disagree with the idea of advertising within schools.
Advertisers do whatever it would take to make their products or ideas appealing to their audience. Including the audience of youth, which are we in the schools. I agree and disagree with this use because of the types of ads being used in the schools. I agree with the ads about development within the academic areas, such as posters telling us that reading is good for the mind or saying that a good attitude is a step towards success. But I disagree with the ads that promote a bad attitude within the school such as having vending machines with junk food in the school, promoting unhealthy eating and a slacker point of view. But mostly I think that media is great to have within schools because we spend most of our time there, and being exposed to the ads would help us prepare for the messages that they hold when we must interpret them for ourselves in the future. Media, advertising and corporate sponsorship in schools create negative, but more positive attitudes within this learning environment.
