Canada Wins Gold Medal at 2007 IIHF Men's World Championship in Russia

Canada's Rick Nash Named MVP

MOSCOW 13 May 2007 – Canada wins the gold medal at the 2007 IIHF World Championship with a 4-2 win over Finland on Sunday evening. Canada finishes this year's event with a perfect 9-0 record.

Led by team captain Shane Doan, Canada's victory today marks the third goal medal victory for Canada at the past five World Championships (gold in 2007, 2004 and 2003). Canada also won a silver medal in 2005 in Austria, while finishing 4th in 2006.

On Sunday in the gold medal game versus Finland, Canada's Rick Nash and Eric Staal scored power play goals in the first period, and Colby Armstrong added an even-strength marker halfway through the second period to take a 3-0 lead into the final 20 minutes of play.

Finland got on the board with just under nine minutes remaining the in the game, when Petri Kontiola scored to make the game 3-1. Finland kept the pressure on, when Antti Miettinen scored at 17:44 make it a one goal game, 3-2.

Canada's Rick Nash, the MVP of this year's championship and Canada's player of the game in today's game, scored a highlight reel-goal on a breakaway with 1:06 remaining in the game to give Canada a 4-2 lead and to secure the gold medal victory for Canada.

Cam Ward played in goal for Canada, stopping 20 of Finland's 22 shots on goal, while Kari Lehtonen made 14 saves for Finland.
