Brampton – The federal government has expanded the eligibility criteria for the 15.5 per cent transit tax credit. Weekly transit passes and GTA weekly passes are now accepted in addition to monthly passes.
Effective July 1, 2006, Brampton Transit introduced monthly passes with riders eligible to receive a 15.5 per cent tax credit on their 2006 income tax return. The expanded tax credit on weekly passes was proposed in the March 19 federal budget and is retroactive to January 1, 2007.To qualify for the credit, four consecutive weekly passes must be purchased and the rider must retain passes and sales receipts to verify their tax claim.
The cost of an adult weekly pass is $23.50, a student weekly pass is $22 and a seniors' weekly pass is $10.50. The GTA weekly pass is $43 and includes unlimited travel on TTC, Mississauga Transit, York Regional Transit (YRT) and Brampton Transit. To claim a tax credit, transit riders must keep their expired transit passes and receipts to submit with their tax return.
