3-Nothing are really Something
in Brampton Indie Scene
Meeting more people and talking to more people within the Brampton music scene, I have learned the only one thing is certain: no two musicians are a like. This is certainly the case with 3- Nothing. Not only are they 3 unique guys, they also write great rock hooks that sound like no other. I asked them what they wanted a person listening to their music for the first time to experience. "[We] want them to say inside their head, 'Hey, finally something that doesn't sound like all that other fluff I've been hearing…'"
3-Nothing is Drew Poole (Vocals/Guitar), Dale Tudor (Bass/Vocals) and Mike Jones (Drums). I first met Drew and Dale at Mayfield Secondary School. Drew and Dale bonded over a love of vandalism and rock and roll. Drew laughs, "Some things can really bring two friends closer together, like running through backyards laughing and hopping fences." Drew self taught himself bass and then guitar. They met Mike later on when they both joined the same company for day jobs. Mike started off on guitar and then quickly transitioned to drums. "Being such good friends makes this easy work, and makes it fun." Since I met them, their friendliness and warm smiles haven't changed although their hair has! Gone are the dreds and long curls, exchanged perhaps for a more respectable image. It may also have something to do with their growing entourage of children and family. Their families are a big part of their lives. Often times it is difficult to balance the two. Dale's daughter Kaiya comes to some of the Hype shows and seems to enjoy seeing her Daddy play, as well as playing with all the other kids that they bring out. "When we rehearse and I'm on a 'Daddy Weekend', Kaiya gets along with Mike's youngest, Amy, pretty well so they play together while we practice." Mike also has a lot to balance and find it a rewarding struggle. "I've been a musician since before I started a family, so it's nothing new to them. They understand and support me. The struggle part of it is….TIME. Making the time to fit a day job, a family life, and a Rock n' Roll band into your life with out causing problems is the hard part sometimes. It definitely makes life interesting."
Later this may, 3 nothing will be involved with BENEFIT FOR CHANNON, a silent auction and benefit concert held at The Hype on May 13th for a local mother stricken with degenerative heart disease and Jaw Cancer. Their willingness to volunteer shows well exactly how important community and family is for them. "They are such nice guys, always a pleasure to work with" says benefit organizer, Jacquie Lee of Dame Entertainment.
Their influences are surprisingly dispersed thus giving their music an additional flare that flavours their unique sound. Dale says that his are "NoFX , System of A Down, Muse, The Beatles." Dale slips in "Rage Against The Machine" and Mike adds "Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Van Halen, and Metallica." Like many bands in music today, it's difficult to categorize or classify them as just one genre. "I think the only songs we deem worthy enough to keep in our line-up are songs that have emotion structured into the song, though I'd hardly call us an emo-band. What's with that term anyways? Isn't all music emo, really?" So what music exactly can impress other musicians and hold the attention of young babes? Listen to any selection on their on myspace and see. http://www.myspace.com/3nothing I personally suggest you listen to "Adds Up To Nothing", a song who's dueling heavy and melodic opening stuck in my head the first time I heard it. There's a clear amount of feeling in the song. Mike agrees. "I think the lyrics and melody speak to the arrangement, it's a natural process. The dynamics of the performance represent the emotion."
Their first official show as 3-nothing was Spring 2006 at the Vatikan. They have achieved some fame (and also some notoriety) but have had a difficult time finding their place in the Southern Ontario Indie Scene. "I don't know if the scene is more active or if there's more opportunity for up and comers, but I wonder if it would be easier to make a name for yourself in some of the smaller Canadian cities like Vancouver or Halifax" Drew muses. I agree for the most part, but that sort of tour can make or break a band. Despite those fears (or perhaps because of their acknowledgement and attention to them), they have worked hard to put energy and skill into their local shows. The reaction to their recent shows has been excellent. "Folks young and old really like the new stuff and the new covers. Hardly need the subliminal messages in the music at all!" Drew jokes.
Drew's goals are clear. "Money, respect and power. In that order." Mike is more honest. "Rockstardom! of course….or at least to be able to play full time, and not have to work a day job as well." Although their opinions wary, the emotion behind their actions is clear. I'm positive that 3 Nothing will amount to something.
