After purchasing or selling your new/existing home, you will almost immediately be asked the name of your lawyer who will close your transaction. You may already have a lawyer, most will not. I would suggest a few basic criteria to follow: Firstly, if you can, try to utilize a referral from another person who had a positive experience with a firm. Secondly, when you call the firm, do you actually get to speak with the lawyer or are you always talking to a secretary or clerk or even worse and answering machine. This is a sign that an office may not be properly staffed. Thirdly, make sure that the price you are quoted includes legal fees, disbursements and GST. Some lawyers will give you the legal fees only and when you go to close, you will find that the disbursements are substantial.
