Brampton - After 33 years as a firefighter, Jake Haines thought he'd seen it all. But that was before Haines and firefighters Greg Enright, Tom Debski and Rob McMaster were called into action to make a special delivery.
Shortly after starting his 5 p.m. shift at Station 207 on Nov. 12, Debski said somebody began impatiently ringing the doorbell and buzzer at the Vodden Street station. When he reached the front door, Debski said he saw a van, which had pulled into the front parking lot, with a woman in labour in the back seat.
"I got on the radio and told the guys to get down here really quick," said Debski. Within six minutes, the firefighters had delivered a healthy baby boy weighing 7 lbs., 15 oz.
Mom Julie Little was at the Georgetown Santa Claus parade with her family when she started having contractions. Little's mother-in-law, Merry, who is also a nurse, told her son Andrew to drive to the nearest fire or police station.
"We train for this kind of situation all the time, but when the real thing is happening it's a whole different story," added Haines. "The mom was a real trooper. She yelled a couple of times – but that was about it."
The Little family has named their special delivery Callum, a new brother to the couple's 21-month-old son Jacob.
Although Haines was present for the birth of his two children, he says delivering a baby was a phenomenal experience. "It was pretty exciting," he added. "The guys here are all higher than kites."
